We met with the Umea Kommun, the administrative center of the city, so they could explain to us the recycling process of Umea (Sweden) as a whole and their role in it. We then interviewed citizens detailing their personal organisation at home and their epic icy travels to the recycling bins. We both observed them through shadowing and shared their experience first hand to understand what efforts are necessary and what diffciulties they encounter. Following few of the main collecting companies in town from the picking of the bins to their sorting facilities, we discovered how the waste is sorted, compacted and gathered to be sent as raw material for production.
As a result of this exploration, we gathered interviews, observations, data and compiled the results. This overview greatly helped to visualize the process and acknowledge the efforts and the difficulties everyone faces. This research as been the main support for the Green Umea project.
